It is a group from Sevilla , Dr. Beatriz Ponte, Dr. Mª Teresa Alonso,Dr. Maite Pastor,Dr.Francisco Javier Torres and Nurse M. Carmen Martínez Cáceres.

They are planning to stay in Ethiopia from 13th February to 4th March.
This same group has organised a Flamenco Festival which will be taking place on 3rd February at the Real e Ilustre Colegio de Médicos de Sevilla (Royal College of Physicians of Seville) in order to raise funds.

We are soon going to receive copies of the book “THE EYES THAT DO NOT SEE “ published by Ivo Rovira and Ana Ponce. This is a magnificent photographic report narrating the journey of a patient from her village to St. Louise Eye Clinic where she will have cataract surgery. MORE NEWS ABOUT THIS COMING SOON

We have today received the following letter from Sister Hiwot Zewde, Sister in Charge at Saint Louise Eye Clinic . We would like to share its contents with you:

Dear Dr. Julio de la Cámara,

Greetings to you from Mekelle. How are you? We are all fine and service of the poor is going well.

................................................

It is also time to let you know as to who is going to run the clinic. The council and the provincial have decided to respond to your request positively and they have asked me to continue working in the clinic for indefinite time with one condition. This condition is I have also to do my study if possible in Mekelle University and if not in one of the universities in Addis Ababa even if it has to be through distant education. A young sister will come to work in the clinic with me in order to help me with the little day to day activities so that the service will continue to be given effectively, study will be carried out and hopefully Dr. Cámara (Proyecto Vision) is also happy. This decision was made because of your request and the request was taken seriously because of the wonderful long term help Proyecto Vision gives to the poor making many sacrifices yourselves so that some poor person will benefit at the other end.

Kind regards

Cristina Pérez also proved their great professional ability.
290 surgeries were performed, including several squints and glaucomas and the doctors visited some 700 patients.
These teams have also dealt with many different administration aspects, financial, our relationship with the government, new projects, etc.
Another team will soon be on its way.more.....

During the second fortnight in May Dr.Vito Mariella worked at the centre in Embidolo and also at St.Louise Eye Clinic in Mekelle

PROYECTO VISION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our AGM will be taking place this year on Friday 11th May

PROYECTO VISION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Proyecto Visión’s AGM took place on 8th April in the assembly hall of the School of the Sacred Heart (Diputación) Barcelona.
We wish to thank the School for having kindly lent its facilities to Proyecto Visión once again.
The meeting was very well attended. Also, for the first time we shared a cold buffet dinner with those who wished to stay on, in the centre’s own dining room. It was a very pleasant and lively occasion and it provided the opportunity of meeting and getting to know one another .
The catering was provided by a company with a social rehabilitation programme (SALTA), it trains staff and
helps them to find jobs.
The experience was certainly a great success.

A MOVING STORY

In February, the Sevillian team met a nurse who had been working at Quiha hospital. He was already blind in one eye when suddenly he had a detached retina on the other eye and consequently he was now completely blind. Having asked the Spanish doctors what could be done for him in Spain, without previous warning he visited an opththalmologist in Addis Abeba ,this only made matters worse.
The next team was already working over there when Aserat came back in a desperate situation.
The sequence of events is as follows :
We called Dr.Rodriguez Infante in Barcelona, he is a retina specialist.
We negotiated with the Spanish Embassy.
On 31st March Aserat and his wife arrived in Barcelona.
On 2nd April Dr. Rodriguez Infante and Dr. García Arumí performed surgery.
On 3rd April Aserat could see.
On 21st April he returned to Ethiopia, extremely excited, extremely happy and very grateful.
The Proyecto Visión team was enormously satisfied with the result of the joint effort.
Today, 3rd June, we have heard that Aserat is back at work.
